Sour Beer, Isabelle

It was a parking anxiety dream (I love public transit). One big mess of skinny streets and ambiguous signs.

If you were a nail polish, what would your name be?
Blue moon.

How have you grown as a woman in the past 5 years?
I'd say I've begun to carve out a sense of self: the one I am right now, what I enjoy doing, reading, listening to, wearing--as well as the self I'd eventually like to grow up to be.

You're throwing your dream dinner party. 6 people dead or alive can come. Who's on the list?
J.K. Rowling, my sister, my best friend, the object of my affection (currently unaware of said affection), Haruki Murakami, and his guest of choice.

What's your go-to outfit?
Jeans, tucked-in button down, felt boots, one braid.

You're President for a day. What's the first issue you tackle?
Climate change

What's on your pizza?
Ricotta, ‘shrooms, sun-dried tomatoes, fresh mozz.

Why is sour beer your drink of choice?
I love how taprooms approach the sour beer differently. There's such a range of mouth-puckering, vinegary, and strawberry-sweet sips--each brew introduces a different character.

What's your favorite thing about Minneapolis?
The view from the Guthrie’s Endless Bridge.

Kombucha, Bobbilee

Describe yourself in 5 words or less:

Ambitious, impatient, excited, curious...

What music are you listening to lately?

John Lee Hooker - 'what do you say' and Bad Bad Hats

Tell us about the last dream you remember having.

I was in a cabin in the mountains and there were bears eating all my snacks. Really bummed me out.

If you were a nail polish, what would your name be?

Hmmm. Maybe “fjord.” I just i love the word “fjord."

How have you grown as a woman in the past 5 years?

Lets see, well in 2014 I had a pretty gnarly surgery that changed my life. Short answer it made me live my days through a different lens. I wanna do all the things all the time and I no longer see that as a negative thing.

You're throwing your dream dinner party. 6 people dead or alive can come. Who's on the list?

Joy Mangano, Katherine Switzer, Natalie Maines, Ben Moon, my mom and dad

You're President for a day. What's the first issue you tackle?

Human trafficking.

What's on your pizza?

Extra spinach.

Why is Kombucha your drink of choice?

All day everyday, gingerade kombucha! If it has to be alcohol, mezcal. It's smokey and has a vintage feel to it.

What's your favorite thing about Minneapolis?

Running trails around the lakes and river banks, playing pond hockey at Lake of the Isles, the creative energy/culture, going to old/classic bars with my dad.

Tell us about the last dream you remember having

My dreams are usually so incredibly weird that it's hard to write them down. It would probably look something like, 'my sister and I were on a pirate ship trying to make waffles when an aardvark (my mom) came along and then started performing Mamma Mia before we fell into a giant marshmallow and ended up being rescued by a hot air balloon (George Clooney) and my co-worker, one of which I made out with.'

If you were a nail polish, what would your name be?
Crashley

How have you grown as a woman in the past 5 years?
I look back at myself five years ago and can't believe how both proud and embarrassed I am. How can two opposites be felt so concurrently? I've learned a lot about who I am and what I need out of relationships, work and personal time. My style has also hit a high point (thank-you neutrals!).

You're throwing your dream dinner party. 6 people dead or alive can come. Who's on the list?
Charlotte Bronte, Amy Poehler, my Best Friend, my Sister, and Beyonce (duh).

What's your go-to outfit?
Tights and shift-dresses with ankle boots. Half the struggle of getting ready in the morning is figuring out the whole under-garment sitch. (Does this show my underwear line? Do I HAVE to wear a thong? Is this a strapless bra situation or a cami+bra scenario?) Shift dresses don't care what you wear underneath. #Readyin5

You're President for a day. What's the first issue you tackle?
Equal pay for women.

What's on your pizza?

Pepperoni, green olives, onion and mushrooms.

Why is an old fashioned your drink of choice?

What's your favorite thing about Minneapolis?
UUUGH. EVERYTHING. I love that there's a giant mural of Bob Dylan downtown. I love that we put bike lanes everywhere. I love the food scene, the music scene and the fashion scene. I love that if you squint your eyes just right you can pretend your in a quiet forest when you're really just on Minnehaha Parkway.

I’m always discovering bottles that I love. When it tastes good, it’s smooth and enjoyable— not something you need to rush through and it basically goes with every meal.

What's your favorite thing about St. Paul?
There's so much history here, which means there are so many stories and lives buried in the bones of the city. There are gorgeous historical mansions that remind you that there is more to life than just this moment-- the todays, yesterdays, and tomorrows make up a life that will come and go and someday also be a part of the telling of St. Paul's tale. It's gothic and dark but I find it all so romantic, because in the end, everyone has a story to tell, it's just that a few-- the Fitzgeralds and the James J. Hills-- gain notoriety, but that doesn't make ours any less beautiful. Our stories are just built into the stones.

Riahta, Mulled Wine

These are playing on my laptop: A Very She & Him Christmas, Ben Howard, The Smiths and a Mike Birbiglia podcast (because apparently laughter reduces eczema)

Tell us about the last dream you remember having.

I have a terrible memory and normally don’t dream much. But when I do, it’s usually when I’m stressed so they’re weird and abstract. They might consist of a mash-up with: the boy I’m crushing on, being locked out of my house with a mountain of cupcakes and a dress making competition that’s in full swing.

If you were a nail polish, what would your name be?

Inconsistent Indigo

How have you grown as a woman in the past 5 years?

I’m not as apologetic about my decisions anymore and don’t take on anyone else’s guilt as much as I used too. I’m a lot more gentler with myself too, which is a great feeling, you know? Like I can pamper myself/eat cake/nap without any guilt even if my day hasn’t been productive, just because I can.

Unemployment

What's on your pizza?

Bacon, pineapple, mushrooms, red onions and plenty of cheese

Why is a mulled wine your drink of choice?

Tell us about the last dream you remember having.

If you were a nail polish, what would your name be?

Sass with Soul.

How have you grown as a woman in the past 5 years?

I've learned to love myself, as is. I got a tattoo a couple years ago that says: "Do you," which basically means -- don't look at anyone else's plate. You're throwing your dream dinner party. 6 people dead or alive can come. Who's on the list?

Lots of cheese, olives and mushrooms.

Why is red wine your drink of choice?

I've been drinking it since I was 18 when I was living Italy. It's both sophisticated and snuggly: you can easily drink it at a posh bar in a LBD,  as well as in front of a roaring fireplace in pjs. It also pairs perfectly with my favorite food in the world: cheese.

I can’t commit to one because I literally own every nail polish color possible. I want to be every color.

How have you grown as a woman in the past 5 years?

I feel more complete, more independent, and more comfortable. More complete because I met my father for the first time two years ago. I felt like I found a huge missing piece to my puzzle. I am more independent in general but for one I stopped depending on others for my own happiness and realized that I ultimately control my own happiness. I feel more comfortable with who I am and I don’t care as much what other people think.

Tell us about the last dream you remember having.

I was in a six-floor natural-history museum, and each floor was themed differently, and you had to progress through all the rooms to get to the next level. I was trying to catch up to my friend who’d gone ahead but I couldn’t find him and finally got into this creepy-looking elevator as a shortcut to the top floor. But once inside the elevator I realized it was ocean-themed, and this oxygen-filled saran-wrap suit dropped around me and sealed me in, and then the elevator car filled with water and I was floating. When the elevator stopped at the sixth floor the water poured out and I met my friend by the exit, where he was scrolling through his Twitter feed, and he was all like, What’s the big deal?

If you were a nail polish, what would your name be?

Youthful bitter laughter

How have you grown as a woman in the past 5 years?

I’ve learned that other people cannot create or protect my happiness. But nobody is happy in a vacuum and we have to bear each other’s burdens. I have learned that my life is richer when I both share my burdens with my friends and help hold their burdens.

Tell us about the last dream you remember having.

The Mall of America was a country and my family lived there. We were trying to escape and had packed up our house but couldn’t get our car past the security guards at the entrance. So we ditched the car and got on this seemingly endless escalator on our way to the airport (all inside the mall of course). Once there the guard stopped me and told me I was the best suitcase packer he’d ever seen and that I should write a book on it.

If you were a nail polish, what would your name be?

Once upon a time

How have you grown as a woman in the past 5 years?

I have a much better understanding of who I am and what I want out of life. I used to think that I had to use everything up – my energy and my time – to feel accomplished at the end of the day. It was a constant game that left me exhausted and emotionally drained. At one point in the last couple of years I decided I was sick of feeling drained and I slowly began to find ways each day to fill myself up emotionally, intellectually and socially. I’m far from perfecting this method of living but I feel much healthier and happier at the end of every day.

I have apocalyptic dreams…constantly. Lately I’ve been having one å la “The Impossible” (based on the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami in Thailand) where I’m married to Justin Timberlake (love u, don’t forget our anniversary dinner this Friday) and we are running around on the beach like lunatics while a massive wave is just waiting to exhale on our sorry asses. Taylor is a MN girl who just happens to live and work in Washington, DC. She likes to do yoga, dance to Prince and save the world one Congressional district at a time.  She drinks whiskey and ginger ale when she’s feeling naughty, and PBR when she’s feeling cheap. If you feel like hanging out with her, follow her @tayobrien or read more about being young, whimsical, passionate and sleepy at Wander and Whimsy

Sassy, Driven, Intelligent, Whimsical, Sleepy

What's playing in your car/iPod right now?

My friend Valerie June's amazing album "Working Woman Blues," and NSYNC's Greatest Hits. Obviously.

Tell us about the last dream you remember having.

I usually don't remember my dreams but it is probably safe to say Harry Styles was there.

If you were a nail polish, what would your name be?

Revlon Cherries in the Snow. It is always on my fingers and toes, regardless of season.

How have you grown as a woman in the past 5 years?

I trust myself more now than I ever have before, and that has been a huge journey. Still working on it.

Skinny jeans, riding boots, flowy top, lots and lots of mismatched jewelry. And probably a cardigan.

You're president for a day. What's the first issue you tackle?

Women's access to contraception and safe abortions. Our ability to control when and how we have children is no longer up for debate. Please get out of my cooch, thank you very much.

Pineapples and pesto.

Why is Whiskey and Gingerale your drink of choice?

Whiskey and Gingerale when I'm feeling scandalous. Champagne every other day of the week.

If you were a nail polish, what would your name be?

Statement Sparkles.

How have you grown as a woman in the past 5 years?

How haven’t I? I’ve learned how to be more patient, more accepting of myself and others. I used to have a lot of angst but yoga has really helped me tame a lot of that and understand myself better.

What's your go-to outfit?

A big sparkly necklace and a simple blouse with jeans and flats.

You're president for a day. What's the first issue you tackle?

Old Fashioned, Stephanie

Stephanie Johnson is pursuing candidacy for ministry and plans to move to Seattle in the spring for her MDiv.  In the meantime, she's savoring her last year in Minneapolis by loving the lakes, fields, friends and forests which have been her home for 27 years.  Wherever she goes, she's a fan of both solitary spaces and deep friendships, the medieval women mystics, instagram photography, interfaith community, tensions rather than disconnect, breaking through the back of words, a good cup of coffee, the golden hour, and writing about the brilliant gifts of the daily and ordinary.
