Scotch, Julienne

Julienne Isaacs spends a lot of time reading and writing, too much time fighting coffee, iTunes and Netflix addictions (not necessarily in that order), and never enough time cycling, walking and laughing with friends in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The Jayhawks, Agnes Obel, Spoon, The Black Keys, The Kooks.

Tell us about the last dream you remember having.

I was in a six-floor natural-history museum, and each floor was themed differently, and you had to progress through all the rooms to get to the next level. I was trying to catch up to my friend who’d gone ahead but I couldn’t find him and finally got into this creepy-looking elevator as a shortcut to the top floor. But once inside the elevator I realized it was ocean-themed, and this oxygen-filled saran-wrap suit dropped around me and sealed me in, and then the elevator car filled with water and I was floating. When the elevator stopped at the sixth floor the water poured out and I met my friend by the exit, where he was scrolling through his Twitter feed, and he was all like, What’s the big deal?

If you were a nail polish, what would your name be?

Youthful bitter laughter

How have you grown as a woman in the past 5 years?

I’ve learned that other people cannot create or protect my happiness. But nobody is happy in a vacuum and we have to bear each other’s burdens. I have learned that my life is richer when I both share my burdens with my friends and help hold their burdens.

You're throwing your dream dinner party. 6 people dead or alive can come. Who's on the list?

Flannery O’Connor, Thom Yorke, Sofia Coppola, Agatha Christie, Demetri Martin and Karl Barth. The conversation would be BIZARRE.

Restoring funding to the arts sector.

What's on your pizza?

Why is a single malt-scotch your drink of choice?

If I'm at home alone with an old movie or a book--nothing beats its beauty and warmth. But if I'm out with friends I like the sociable tang of a gin-and-tonic.
